Bible Verses About Trust

Trust forms the foundation of relationship with God, requiring confident reliance on His character despite circumstances. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to trust God's goodness, wisdom, and power when understanding fails.

9 Verses

1. Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
"Trust" means to "wholly and securely rely upon God's wisdom, power, and goodness" - not trusting in "creature enjoyments" like wealth or personal wisdom. "Lean not on understanding" warns against depending on "the strength of thine own wit without God's blessing" since human understanding is "darkened by sin" and limited. "In all thy ways acknowledge Him" means seeking God's guidance in every aspect of life. By trusting God completely, "He shall direct thy steps" toward safe and good paths. This represents a "fundamental principle of all religion" - total reliance on God (BibleHub Commentaries).

2. Psalm 56:3

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."
MacLaren notes "It is when we are 'afraid' that we trust in God; not in easy times." Trust emerges precisely during moments of fear. Barnes explains fear is natural, designed to "make us cautious" and "induce us to put our trust in God as a Preserver and Friend." The Treasury of David emphasizes fear and faith can coexist: "It is possible for fear and faith to occupy the mind at the same moment." "Gracious fear drives to [God]." Gill adds "trust and confidence in the Lord is the best antidote against fears." Fear is not weakness but opportunity to deliberately choose trust in God's protection (BibleHub Commentaries).

3. Isaiah 26:4

"Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal."
Matthew Henry notes trusting God provides "peace at all times, in all events." Barnes emphasizes trust should not fail "on no occasion" - not through "calamity, adversity, persecution, or poverty." Gill explains this means trusting God "at all times, in every state and condition" because His strength is always available and "will support under, and in his own time deliver out of every trouble." God as "everlasting Rock" or "Rock of ages" shows His unchanging nature makes Him a reliable, permanent source of strength and protection for those who trust Him completely (BibleHub Commentaries).

4. Romans 8:28

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
"All things work together for good to them that love God" - those "called according to His purpose." "All things" encompasses positive and negative experiences including sufferings, trials, persecutions. Benson notes these can "bring them nearer to God," help "purge corrupt passions," and increase "holiness and conformity." The promise isn't that everything is good, but God uses everything for good in believers' lives. This knowledge provides hope and assurance, transforming how believers view challenges (BibleHub Commentaries).

5. Psalm 20:7

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."
Barnes notes "Their entire trust was in God" rather than military equipment. Chariots and horses were "main reliance in determining the result of a battle." Gill emphasizes these represent external things people wrongly depend on for salvation. Matthew Henry: "Our first step to victory in spiritual warfare is to trust only in the mercy and grace of God; all who trust in themselves will soon be cast down." The Cambridge Bible calls this a "watchword and strength" - the difference between heathen reliance on military power versus faithful reliance on divine protection (BibleHub Commentaries).

6. Jeremiah 17:7-8

"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."
Matthew Henry: Those "who make God their Hope, shall flourish like a tree always green, whose leaf does not wither." Benson describes the blessed as "like a tree planted in fertile soil, on the bank of a river" remaining green and fruitful during drought. Gill explains the blessed person trusts in Christ, relies on Him for "salvation, grace here, and glory hereafter," and "expects all from him." The tree metaphor portrays trusting God as resilient tree by water, thriving and producing fruit even in challenging conditions, symbolizing spiritual strength and divine provision (BibleHub Commentaries).

7. Psalm 9:10

"Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you."
Ellicott notes they who "know the name of Jehovah will trust Him" as it represents "strength and protection." Matthew Henry: Those who understand God's character will "trust in him at all times" because He never abandons seekers. Barnes: "The more intimate our knowledge of God, the more entirely shall we trust in him." Gill adds knowing God's name means understanding His "grace and mercy" and recognizing Him as "complete, all sufficient, and everlasting Saviour." Genuine knowledge of God's character naturally produces trust, as He has proven record of never forsaking sincere seekers (BibleHub Commentaries).

8. 2 Timothy 1:12

"That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day."
MacLaren: Paul has "committed himself to God" entirely, entrusting his "own individual being" to divine protection. God will "strengthen" and "hold him up" through challenges. Barnes notes Paul's faith involves "committing the soul's salvation to the Son of God" with complete trust Christ will preserve what's valuable. Gill: Paul is "unconcerned as to my sufferings" having "intrusted God with all my concerns" for this life and next. Despite suffering, Paul remains unashamed knowing God's ability to protect his spiritual "deposit" until Christ's return. MacLaren: "I know whom I have trusted... be sure that your trust will not be disappointed" (BibleHub Commentaries).

9. Nahum 1:7

"The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him,"
God is "good" even in times of severity, offering "comfort to believers" amid terror (Matthew Henry). He is a "stronghold in the day of trouble," providing refuge where "His own may take refuge" (Barnes). God "knows" those who trust Him - Gill explains this means God "loves, and has the strongest affection for" those who depend on Him. Despite God's potential for judgment, He is fundamentally protective and caring toward seekers. This provides hope that God's goodness offers refuge while His justice ensures ultimate victory (BibleHub Commentaries).
