# Lexicon data: attribution, licenses, and modifications

This notice applies to the generated `greek.json`, `hebrew.json`,
`sense-reference-index.json`, and range-sharded `lsj/*.json` datasets distributed by Lumenology. It does not
apply a Creative Commons license to Lumenology's independent application code,

## United Bible Societies dictionary data

Primary definitions, glosses, sense codes, semantic domains, and sense
references are adapted from these United Bible Societies resources:

- **United Bible Societies Dictionary of New Testament Greek**, © United Bible Societies, 2023.
Adapted from *Semantic Dictionary of Biblical Greek*, © United Bible
Societies 2018–2023, itself adapted from *Greek-English Lexicon of the New
Testament: Based on Semantic Domains*, edited by J. P. Louw and Eugene A.
Nida, © United Bible Societies 1988, 1989. The exhaustive Scripture-reference
data was created and made available by SIL.
- **United Bible Societies Dictionary of Biblical Hebrew**, © United Bible Societies, 2023.
Adapted from *Semantic Dictionary of Biblical Hebrew*, © 2000–2023 United
  Bible Societies.

The source files are `UBSGreekNTDic-v1.1-en.JSON` and
`UBSHebrewDic-v0.9.2-en.JSON` from the
[United Bible Societies open-license repository](https://github.com/ubsicap/ubs-open-license),
licensed under
[Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/).

**United Bible Societies `Comments` fields and all editorial notes are intentionally excluded
from the generated datasets.** Lumenology does not ingest, transform, store,
or display those fields.

## STEP Bible alignment data

Original-language headwords, transliterations, Strong's alignment, morphology
hooks, occurrence alignment, and fallback glosses come from
[STEP Bible Data](https://github.com/STEPBible/STEPBible-Data), licensed under
[Creative Commons Attribution 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).

Full Greek fallback entries come from STEP Bible's **Translators Formatted full
LSJ Bible lexicon** (`TFLSJ 0-5624` and `TFLSJ extra`), also licensed under CC
BY 4.0. STEP's source adapts the full Liddell-Scott-Jones lexicon from Perseus
with formatting, corrections, expanded abbreviations, and features added by
Tyndale House scholars.

Strong's numbers remain as identifiers. Historical Strong's definitions are
not used as a general definition source or as the fallback for unmatched United Bible Societies
entries. A deliberately limited set of public-domain 1890 definitions may be
shown separately in the interface for comparison on lexically contested terms;
these are labeled as historical wording and not primary lexical analysis.

## Lumenology modifications

Lumenology modified and combined the source data on July 17–20, 2026 by joining
United Bible Societies dictionary meanings to STEP-aligned records, normalizing identifiers, validating
ambiguous joins against lemmas, converting references and structural markup,
limiting embedded examples to 24 references per meaning, excluding all United Bible Societies
editorial comments, generating a passage-to-meaning index from the exhaustive United Bible Societies
references, and excluding STEP TBESH's longer third-party `Meaning` field.
The STEP full LSJ files are additionally converted from browser-oriented HTML
to inert Markdown, stripped of executable links, keyed by normalized extended
Strong's number, and split into 50-entry range shards so only a small bounded
portion is read for a fallback lookup.

The generated datasets, including Lumenology's contributions to these adapted
databases, are available under
[CC BY-SA 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). No endorsement
by United Bible Societies, SIL, STEP Bible, or any source contributor is implied. The datasets are
provided as-is and without warranties.
